Pathex Filter Media: Installation & Maintenance

Pathex Antimicrobial Filter Media logo
Pathex filter media is commonly used as a drop-in replacement for a variety of filtration devices, such as traditional sand, cross-flow and side-stream filters. Its use can reduce the need for oxidizing biocides by as much as 90%.

INSTALLATION

Pathex should be kept dry prior to installation.

For new installations:
  1. To install Pathex media, add a small amount of water to the filter chamber, then simply pour the Pathex into your filtration device.
  2. No modifications to the water filter system are required.

For retrofit installations:
  1. Use a shop vac or other method to completely remove the old media.
  2. Inspect and clean all internal plumbing mechanisms.
  3. If the previous media was contaminated or fouled, disinfect the interior of the vessel using an appropriate FIFRA registered product.
  4. Add a small amount of water to the filter chamber and pour in the Pathex.
  5. No modifications to the water filter system are required.

Because Pathex contains no chemicals, there are no special requirements for handling the media other than normal safety precautions used when handling sand.
MAINTENANCE

Unlike other filter media, Pathex won’t cake and does
not require periodic cleaning with chemicals. Regularly backwashing your system will remove trapped debris
and bring Pathex back to optimal performance standards.

Certain industrial water applications, however, may
include “dead legs” that necessitate the periodic use
of chemical disinfectants to provide biocidal treatment
in those areas.
  • Avoid creating dust when handling, using, or storing.
  • Use only with adequate ventilation to keep exposure below recommended exposure limits.
  • Do not use as a dry abrasive blasting agent.
  • Follow OSHA or other relevant safety and health standards for the form of crystalline silica called quartz.

Specs:
  • The media is shipped on pallets in sealed 5-gallon buckets, each weighing 50 pounds.
  • Available in 20 mesh, 40 mesh, and 70 mesh standard sizes.
  • Treatment is achieved at a surface-area loading rate up to 20 gallons per minute per square foot (20gpm/ft2).
  • Pathex is rated for backwashing at a maximum flow rate of 15 gallons per minute per square foot (15fpm/ft2)
  • Pathex removes 95% of suspended particles down to the submicron (0.5 microns) level (dependent on filter system design).
  • Pathex is EPA-registered and NSF/ANSI-61 certified.
  • Pathex requires no power source and no chemicals.
  • If properly maintained, Pathex filter media can perform effectively for years.
