After a multi-year application and evaluation process, PathShield™ water filter media, manufactured in the United States by AS Filtration, LLC, recently earned registration and licensing* as an antimicrobial pesticide by California’s Department of Pesticide Regulation (CDPR).  AS Filtration understands the high value of our limited water resources and offers a straightforward, cost-effective solution to kill and control harmful waterborne coliform bacteria to increase the beneficial uses of our water.

During the evaluation process, stringent testing verified that PathShield antimicrobial filter media destroys coliform bacteria on contact and is non-toxic, making it an effective solution for reducing and controlling bacteria in stormwater, industrial wastewater, and municipal wastewater.

AS Filtration developed PathShield as a unique stable, non-toxic, non-leaching, non-corrosive product to kill and control waterborne coliform bacteria, virtually eliminating the harmful consequences of conventional oxidizing biocide treatment methods.

Typical water filtration solutions require multiple stages to be effective to remove solids, like sediment and debris, then chemical treatment to address harmful waterborne bacteria. Water treatment products, like oxidizing biocides, can themselves be harmful to the environment. PathShield, however, filters and treats the water in a single step, without using or releasing toxic chemicals or destructive disinfection byproducts.

PathShield does more than physically remove debris and bacteria; it kills coliform bacteria that pass through the media. This biocidal action is continuous at high flow rates, with a surface area loading rate up to 20 gallons per minute per square foot. PathShield’s silica granules are considered a drop-in replacement for standard sand filter media, making it an economical solution for stormwater and most wastewater treatment applications.

California has long been recognized as the leader for establishing stringent environmental and consumer protection standards. Achieving both CDPR and U.S.EPA registration is an undeniable testimony that PathShield is an effective and innovative water treatment solution for filtration and bacterial control that can increase the beneficial uses of our water resources. Why EPA Registration Matters in Water Treatment: Technical Report

10/26/2015

EPA Registration Tech Reports
Put simply, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) registration for a pesticide validates a product’s ability to kill bacteria or other pests. To earn the U.S. EPA registration, a product must undergo rigorous testing to confirm its ability to perform as promised without posing unreasonable risks to people or the environment.

AS Filtration attained EPA registration for our groundbreaking filter media so consumers can be confident about the quality, effectiveness and safety of our products when used as directed to control waterborne bacteria during the water filtration process.

Because of their EPA registration, you can be assured that our filter media products:
  • Have been thoroughly tested
  • Destroy harmful waterborne bacteria, including coliform
  • Meet high standards of safety and efficacy
  • Deliver proven results
  • Are safe to handle and store

PathShield Filter Media Earns EPA Registration

PathShield earns EPA registration
PathShield™ filter media, manufactured in the U.S. by AS Filtration, LLC, recently earned U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) registration* as an antimicrobial pesticide.

Stringent testing during the evaluation process confirmed that PathShield antimicrobial filter media kills waterborne bacteria, like coliform, on contact, without the use or release of toxic chemicals or destructive disinfection byproducts. Bacteria cells rupture instantly upon contact with PathShield filter media, making it an environmentally friendly, sustainable option for reducing and controlling waterborne bacteria.

AS Filtration developed PathShield as a stable, non-toxic, non-leaching, non-corrosive product to kill and control waterborne coliform bacteria, virtually eliminating the harmful consequences of conventional oxidizing biocide chemical treatment methods.

The relatively large granule size of the silica filter media makes it an ideal water treatment solution for stormwater and other high flow rate applications. Biocidal action is continually and instantaneously achieved with a surface-area loading rate up to 20 gallons per minute per square foot.

PathShield and Pathex filter media use the same technology to kill waterborne bacteria on contact. Seeking – and earning – EPA registration for both brands offers concrete proof of the filter media’s efficacy of the technology in various applications.

Does Your Water Treatment Plan Address the Symptom or the Problem?

Are You Being Proactive?
Many common water treatment solutions today are reactive in nature, attempting to keep corrosion, biofouling, and scaling in balance. The symptoms can be managed, but they won’t go away until the major underlying problem, bacterial overgrowth, is solved.

Chemicals are hazardous to handle and store and are hard on equipment, often causing corrosion in pipes and tanks. Copper and silver are expensive, and bacteria can mutate after treatment, rendering the metals ineffective as long-term treatment options. Ozone is touted as a more earth-friendly option, but it causes corrosion and is dangerous to handle. It also requires specialized equipment that drives up maintenance costs. Finally, ultra-violet light needs frequent maintenance, performs poorly in turbid water (That’s worth repeating: It’s not effective on water that’s already dirty!), and it leaves your water vulnerable to mutating bacteria.

What if there was a way to eliminate expensive and dangerous procedures, reduce corrosion and clean water without harming the environment?

The AS Filtration Alternative

AS Filtration’s filter media products kill waterborne bacteria on contact during filtration, leaving you with clean, clear water that is not prone to scaling or biofouling. The filter media doesn’t use or leach chemicals, so it’s a sustainable option that prolongs your equipment life and reduces maintenance expenses.

By killing and controlling waterborne bacteria before problems start, both Pathex and PathShield filter media offer these benefits:

  • Improved operational efficiency
Keeping bacterial growth in check prevents scaling, corrosion and fouling, extending the life of your equipment and allowing it to operate more efficiently.
  • Decreased maintenance costs
The filter media can be used as a drop-in replacement for most sand and cross-flow filters, so it doesn’t require special equipment. The media is safe to store and handle, and there’s no need for constant monitoring and adjustment of pricey chemicals. Simple backwashing keeps the media operating at peak performance.
  • Environmental protection
Our filter media are EPA-registered pesticides. They don’t use or release chemicals, so they’re safe for your site and for the environment. Pathex and PathShield support your green initiatives and can help your facility earn LEED certification points.
  • Treating the cause instead of the symptom
Bacterial growth in water is the major underlying cause of common water treatment headaches like scaling, corrosion and biofouling. Controlling waterborne bacteria is the ounce of prevention that’s worth a pound of cure when it comes to water treatment.

Whether your water treatment need is for stormwater runoff, cooling towers, or other industrial use, our expert engineers are ready to help find the best filtration solution for addressing your water treatment problems.
